The Iranian soccer team left a handwritten note in their locker room following Sunday’s 0-0 draw against Belgium in Los Angeles, according to multiple reports. The message called for “peace, respect and friendship” among all nations.
Iran secured draws in each of their first two matches, which were both played in Los Angeles. The team has leveled several complaints regarding their treatment at this year’s World Cup. The U.S. has limited the federation’s travel, requiring players to travel from a Mexican base camp the day before matches and leave the country immediately after playing.
“We came to Los Angeles with pride, competed with honour, and leave with dignity. Thank you, Los Angeles, for your hospitality,” the note, which was published by Iran’s football federation, read. “And thank you to every Iranian who gave their heart, voice, and soul for Iran throughout these 180 minutes. May peace, respect, and friendship prevail among all nations.”
Los Angeles features the largest contingent of Iranians in the U.S. They outcheered the Belgian supporters throughout Sunday’s match, giving Iran a small-scale home-field advantage.
After the match, Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei repeated concerns about his team’s travel arrangements.
“I think perhaps our team is the most oppressed team in the whole World Cup,” he said after Iran’s opening match.
The Iranians are currently tied for second in Group G with two points. They’ll play Group G leaders Egypt in a final group stage match in Seattle on Friday.
