The industrial base around U.S. shipbuilders is saturated — so Leonardo DRS went to Charleston. CEO John Baylouny says a new facility there is set to build critical components for the Columbia-class submarine by year’s end.
What is Leonardo DRS doing specifically to expand the U.S. industrial base with shipbuilding?
We’re investing heavily in capability across the United States. One of the biggest investments we’ve made is in Charleston, South Carolina. We’re building a new facility. The building is up. We’re getting ready to populate it at the end of the year. This building is going to have the ability to build the motor for the Columbia-class submarine. We’re hiring people in the Charleston area to man it.
The industrial base is saturated in and around the shipbuilders. We moved this away from that area to be able to get the labor that we need.
