Former Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown beat Republican Sen. Jon Husted in Ohio Tuesday, a key pickup for Democrats in their quest to take control of the Senate.

Mr. Brown, 73, will return to the Senate after a two-year hiatus following his 2024 loss and will have to work alongside Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno, who beat him in that race. He served in the Senate for 18 years before his 2024 loss.

President Trump held several campaign rallies in Ohio in recent weeks to boost Mr. Husted, a former lieutenant governor, but it was not enough.

This was Mr. Husted’s first race for Senate after he was appointed to temporarily fill Vice President J.D. Vance’s seat.

Data centers were one of the key issues in the race, as Mr. Brown hammered Mr. Husted for backing “sweetheart tax cuts” that led to their explosion in the state.

Mr. Husted tried to counter the attacks with a bill designed to protect consumers from data center-driven electricity rate increases.

Senate Democrats blocked the measure, arguing it had no teeth to force data center operators to pay for their own electricity needs.
