The Washington Times’ Sept. 30 editorial asks why Sen. Mark Warner, Virginia Democrat, is apparently avoiding a debate with his Republican challenger (“Why is Sen. Mark Warner dodging debates?”). There are two main reasons.

First, Mr. Warner is dodging debates because he can. He won his previous senatorial elections because of the overwhelming Democratic votes from deep-blue northern Virginia. That part of the commonwealth will support him again, by a huge majority, this year.

Second, in 2024, Mr. Warner watched as then-candidate Abigail Spanberger refused to answer key questions on issues important to all Virginian voters. Even the debate moderators could not get her to answer those questions.

Yet the result of her cowardice was a landslide election victory, largely from northern Virginia’s Democratic voters, and she is governor.

Northern Virginia has proved to be a sure bet for Democratic candidates, and Mark Warner knows it.
