The U.S. Space Force last week announced the activation of U.S. Space Forces Special Operations Command to determine how space force capabilities will integrate into elite special forces missions.
SPACEFOR-SOC will work alongside service components within U.S. Special Operations Command, such as the Army Special Operations Command and the Naval Special Warfare Command.
“While space capabilities are already integrated into U.S. SOCOM missions, this activation institutionalizes how the Space Force organizes, trains, equips, and presents forces and prevents forces for the special operations enterprise,” officials said in a statement.

For years, the nation’s elite military forces have relied on space capabilities such as GPS and satellite communications for battlefield intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
SPACEFOR-SOC lets commanders in the field directly request specialized space effects, such as tactical satellite communications, electromagnetic warfare to counter adversary GPS jamming, and tactical signal and missile warning.
“SPACEFOR-SOC’s presence at MacDill [Air Force Base] marks another milestone in the [Pentagon’s] ongoing effort to establish service components within combatant commands, ensuring that space efforts are fully operationalized across every domain of modern fighting,” officials said.
A formal activation ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 2.
The Space Force has established service components to U.S. Space Command, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, U.S. Central Command, U.S. Forces Korea, U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command, U.S. Forces Japan, U.S. Northern Command, and U.S. Southern Command.
