U2 frontman Bono is questioning how people of faith could have supported Elon Musk’s Department of Governmental Efficiency during its tenure.

“What Christian household, what Catholic household, what Jewish, religious — anyone of faith, in fact, anyone of conscience — would allow the hemorrhaging of human life that is going to happen as a result of these DOGE cuts?” Bono said during The New York Times’ “The Interview” podcast posted Saturday.

Mr. Musk’s DOGE was established by an executive order from President Trump on Jan. 20, 2025, and the department shuttered on July 4. Its stated goal was to maximize productivity within the federal government.

“I don’t know how many fatalities will eventually be attributed to the DOGE cuts; there are many different estimates; there’s modeling if you go to, say, the [Lancet British Medical Journal], they suggest … [by] 2030, maybe 5 million children under 5,” the Irish singer said.

The Lancet’s claims have been called into question, including by Mr. Musk himself, who wrote in June that those who have criticized DOGE “cannot cite a single name of someone who died out of the ‘millions’ they falsely claim have died.”
