Active-duty U.S. Army troops in Germany are taking over the training of Ukrainian soldiers, formally ending a decade-long program in which National Guard personnel led the mission.

The Vermont National Guard’s 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Mountain) completed its training deployment last week at the 7th Army Training Command headquarters in Grafenwoehr, Germany.

By shifting the responsibility for training Ukrainian troops to active-duty units stationed in Germany, the Army is moving the mission toward a more permanent footing after its time under National Guard leadership, according to Stars & Stripes.

The Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine was established in 2015 in Yavoriv, Ukraine, and relocated to Germany in 2022. Since then, the task force has trained more than 24,000 Ukrainians for military service in the country’s war against Russia.

“That impact will continue in the readiness, resilience, and capability of the soldiers we trained,” Vermont Army National Guard Col. Frank Tantillo, commander of the 86th IBCT, said Sunday.
