Prince Harry said this week having his children attend British schools was a major reason behind the move from California to the United Kingdom this year.

In an interview with GQ magazine released Wednesday, the Duke of Sussex said the decision was not meant as a slight against American schools, but that he and his wife Meghan Markle wanted their children to have a wider cultural experience.

“They’re loving it, and it’s just giving them a whole different experience,” he said. “I think for kids at 7 and 5 to be able to have that comparison and to have two completely different cultural experiences is so important today.”

The prince added that he wanted to be closer to his family and to be back in Britain on a more regular basis.

The Duke of Sussex has had a contentious relationship with the British royal family ever since his marriage to Ms. Markle in 2018. The two decided to step back from their royal duties in 2020 and moved their family to California, where they had lived until August of this year.

The royal couple’s $100 million production contract with Netflix ended in September 2025 and was not renewed. Netflix also ended its financial partnership with Ms. Markle’s lifestyle brand, As Ever, in March.
