A school district in Southern Michigan has voted to ban biological males from girls’ sports in a motion that passed 4-2.

Andrew Shaw, superintendent of Monroe Public Schools, confirmed the vote, Fox News reported Wednesday.

“As the superintendent, it is my role to implement the policies established by the Board of Education,” he said in a statement. “The policy that was approved is for Monroe Public Schools only and does not impact any visiting school.”

The policy, titled “Girls’ Athletic Participation and Facilities Use,” centers around participation in female athletics and access to school facilities, restricting both to biological girls.

“Participation in girls’ athletics at Monroe Public Schools shall be restricted to biological females as documented on the birth certificate at the time of birth,” the policy reads. “Access to and use of girls’ athletic facilities (locker rooms) shall follow the same restriction.”

Monroe High School volleyball player Briley Lechner and her father, Sean Lechner, filed a federal lawsuit on Oct. 9 against Monroe Public Schools and the Michigan High School Athletics Association, arguing that the district violated Title IX and constitutional claims.
