The Netherlands has pulled out of next year’s edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, reversing course on a decision this year to stay in it.

Public broadcaster NPO said the decision was based on “sensitivities” toward Eurovision over its inclusion of Israel in the competition.

Earlier this year, the Dutch network Avrotros said the Netherlands would not return to the contest in 2027, then suddenly NPO said the country would be back.

NPO media director Jurre Bosman said Tuesday, “Israel’s participation elicits various reactions in society and causes discussion and division.”

NPO Chair Jet de Ranitz added in a statement, “Due to the sensitivities surrounding the themes currently at play, we have decided to take a step back for the time being.”

Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Spain all boycotted the 2026 edition of Eurovision due to Israel’s participation, criticizing the country’s military action in Gaza.
