Recovering addict Hunter Biden said his father would visit him at his crack den apartment in Washington to try to help him escape his downward spiral.
Joseph R. Biden’s motorcade rolled up to Hunter Biden’s apartment on 11th and New Hampshire Avenue at least twice, either late in his term as vice president or shortly after.
“And I’d look out my window, because I’d hear all these cars and see like six SUVs pull up, and my dad gets out and walks with one or two guys, because they have to be next to him, and I hear knocking on my door and I open it and you know, there I would be,” Hunter Biden said on the addiction-focused podcast “Dopey.”
Hunter Biden said he appeared in front of the vice president and Secret Service agents at the door, “in all of the obviousness of someone that was in distress,” and his father knew it.
“He said, ’Please, like, what are you going to do tomorrow? What’s the plan?’” Hunter Biden recounted his father saying.
He promised his father he was “all right” and just “feeling really sad” about his divorce, his children and the death of his brother, Beau Biden, who succumbed to a brain tumor on May 30, 2015.
“Just let me deal with it,” he told the now-former president.
Hunter Biden’s former wife, Kathleen Buhle, filed for divorce in December 2016, the final full month of the Obama administration and Mr. Biden’s term as vice president. It’s unclear whether Mr. Biden visited his son at the crack den while vice president or in the months after he left office, when he continued to be protected by the Secret Service and a motorcade.
Hunter Biden said during the podcast that he’s sober and helps addicted people beat the habit. He said his recovery has greatly improved his life, even on difficult days.
“What I would do is I tell myself, remember when you wouldn’t have a bottle of vodka by your side and the crack pipe was broken, and you literally had to drag your body across the bedroom, across the kitchen floor naked in order to find like, half a beer, just to get enough alcohol in your system so that you could move your joints?” Hunter Biden recalled. “That’s like a motivation.”
Hunter Biden said he kicked the crack habit before his father became president.
While vice president, Mr. Biden likely encountered Hunter Biden’s roommate, who the younger Biden described in his memoir, “Beautiful Things,” as a homeless female drug dealer called Bicycles. She introduced him to crack, and he invited her to stay on a mattress in one of his crack den’s guest rooms.
The woman was given the nickname, Hunter Biden wrote in his memoir, because she was known for riding an oversized mountain bike through D.C. traffic and shouting at pedestrians to “get the hell out of her way.”
She likely met the vice president, he said during the podcast.
“I think he ran into her because my dad showed up, he literally showed up at … my house twice, you know? And just knocked on the door and was like, what are we gonna do? I mean, again and again, he’d call and he’d call, and then when he wouldn’t get the calls, he literally would drive over with a motorcade. Like as small as he could possibly make it.”
In December 2024, President Biden pardoned his son, who was facing prison time stemming from two criminal cases.
Hunter Biden was found guilty in June 2024 of three federal gun charges. Three months later, he entered a guilty plea on nine charges in a federal tax fraud case.
