DALLAS — Mounted police and law enforcement in riot gear faced off with crowds of protesters who blocked streets near the Republican Party’s midterm convention on Thursday.
Protesters waving signs, pounding on drums and shouting “Donald Trump go to hell!” marched down streets near the American Airlines Center, where Republican faithful are gathered for the second and final night of the convention.
President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance are slated to arrive at the arena and address the convention in a matter of hours.
The protest was organized by left-wing groups, among them the Dallas Against Trump Coalition, which advertised the event as an opportunity to “Confront the Trump Agenda!”
The group said the Make America Great Again agenda “means war … neighbors stolen and murdered, civil rights shredded.”
The group planned to rally at a park a few blocks away from the arena, but participants expanded their protest into the streets. They were eventually blocked off by a line of mounted police officers.
The protesters have virtually no chance of breaching the heavily secured arena where Republican VIPs are holding the convention.
The arena is encircled with walls of high fencing and secured by hundreds of law enforcement officers.
