Former Vice President Kamala Harris will campaign with Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed next week as Democrats battle to hold onto the seat and take control of the Senate in November.
The two will appear together Tuesday at a roundtable focused on Black maternal health.
The roundtable will include medical providers and women who will share their stories on the disparities facing Black mothers in pregnancy and giving birth, a spokesperson said.
“Abdul is thrilled to welcome Vice President Harris to Michigan for a conversation about improving Black maternal health and bringing down healthcare costs. … He looks forward to hearing directly from Black women and healthcare providers and discussing how he’ll continue that work in the Senate,” said El-Sayed spokesperson Roxie Richner.
Mr. El-Sayed, who is a medical doctor, is running neck-and-neck against Republican Mike Rogers in the race to replace Sen. Gary Peters, a Democrat who is retiring. It’s a must-win seat for Democrats in their quest to retake the Senate majority.
Ms. Harris, the 2024 Democratic nominee for president who lost to President Trump, endorsed Mr. El-Sayed in August. She said in a statement that he “knows we need bold solutions to the crises facing America’s working families.”
Mr. El-Sayed has faced criticism over some of his far-left statements and his association and friendship with socialist streamer Hasan Piker, who has made anti-Jewish comments, declared his hatred for America and said it “deserved” the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Ms. Harris is considered a possible 2028 presidential candidate and leads all other potential Democratic hopefuls in pre-primary polling.
She narrowly lost Michigan to Mr. Trump in 2024.
