Montgomery County wrote up 269 citations to drivers during the first week of the 2026-27 school year for passing stopped school buses.
In their announcement Wednesday, officials in the Maryland county did not say how many of the 269 tickets were the result of automated bus cameras or how many were issued directly by the Montgomery County Police Department.
The amount a driver is fined depends on how the offense is caught.
If a camera on the side of the bus catches a driver passing, the fine is $250.
If the driver is caught by a police officer, the fine is up to $570, with the possibility of having 3 points added to a license.
The 2025-26 school year saw a 19.1% drop in bus passing citations issued, with 40,854 given to Montgomery County drivers. The three stretches of road that had the most school bus-related tickets were:
• The 7100 block of Arlington Road in Bethesda.
• The 5100 block of River Road in Bethesda.
• The 8800 block of Colesville Road in Silver Spring.
