Letter to the editor: Trump between a rock and hard place on Taiwan

OPINION:

The president is between a rock and a hard place (“Trump, Xi seize on AI rivalry to bring the two rival superpowers closer together,” Web, Sept. 24).

If he follows through on arms sales to Taiwan, he honors the wishes of Congress. But he also risks our critical relationship with China, endangers the importation of its critical rare earth minerals and brings us closer to the unthinkable: a war with another superpower.

If he nixes the sale, he betrays a longtime, important ally and kowtows to China, signaling a green light for it to invade Taiwan.

For now, arms sales to Taiwan are in limbo. That state cannot last indefinitely.

President Trump must make a decision, and he will be damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t.
