Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is not headed to injured reserve for his dislocated left elbow, team officials said Friday. The dual-threat signal-caller is considered week-to-week and won’t undergo surgery at this time.
“As of right now, surgery is not on the table, and we haven’t discussed IR,” Commanders General Manager Adam Peters told “The Sports Junkies” radio show Friday morning.
Daniels visited specialists on Tuesday and Wednesday to determine the extent of the injury after initial X-rays were negative. He suffered a similar dislocation during a game against the Seattle Seahawks last November.
The 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year missed a month before returning to the field with a brace on his left elbow against the Minnesota Vikings. But he reaggravated the injury after trying to make a tackle on an interception. The Commanders then sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
This year, backup quarterback Marcus Mariota is expected to start for the foreseeable future. The 2015 first-round pick of the Tennessee Titans has spent the last three seasons in Washington, filling in for Daniels during 15 games.
Mariota will make his first start of the season during Washington’s home opener against Seattle Sunday afternoon.
“We’re just trying to rally around Marcus,” veteran wide receiver Terry McLaurin said Thursday. “That’s just been our focus: to try to come home and find a win.”
