President Trump warned Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday that his anti-Trump stance might be popular at home politically, but could backfire economically.
Mr. Trump said the second part would leave Mr. Carney worse off across the board.
“It is very good for Canadian Politicians like Prime Minister Carney to make President Donald J. Trump ’the enemy,’ until their Economy collapses, then it will prove to be very bad for Politics — Worse than anything that has ever happened to a Canadian Politician,” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Mr. Trump slapped Mr. Carney as the U.S. and Canada jockey over trade.
The U.S. recently imposed 50% tariffs on a suite of Canadian goods after negotiators failed to reach a deal over Ottawa’s treatment of certain American sectors.
Canada responded with “dollar for dollar” tariffs on U.S. goods that will take effect on Tuesday.
The country north of the border outlined a relief package for Canadian sectors affected by U.S. tariffs and suspended gas taxes on Canadian motorists.
Mr. Carney recently said Mr. Trump needs to get serious about trade negotiations.
“Stop doing memes, stop throwing shade and stop trying to be tough and start being serious about having those discussions — we can have those discussions,” he said Tuesday.
Trump’s team says Canadian officials are relishing the collapse of trade talks because it helps them rally voters.
Major elections are coming up in October in Quebec and Alberta, which is holding an independence referendum.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick this week said the Canadians appeared to blow up the trade talks deliberately, figuring they could play nice after the elections.
Mr. Trump says Canada, which he calls the 51st state, is overreliant on the U.S. and can’t survive without the American market.
While Mr. Carney swept into office in early 2025 by riding anti-Trump sentiment, the U.S. leader says that tactic won’t work for long.
“Just watch!” Mr. Trump wrote Thursday.
