NEOSHO, Mo. (AP) - Authorities in southwestern Missouri’s Newton County say two men are charged with felony assault after one of them allegedly shot at a sheriff’s deputy during a chase.

Prosecutors have charged 29-year-old Joel Alexander Bell of Carthage and 24-year-old Andrew Mitchell Utley of Webb City with first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, as well as with armed criminal action.

Authorities say the deputy was giving chase to Bell and Utley after the vehicle in which they were riding failed to stop for a suspected traffic violation. Investigators say one of the men leaned out of the suspects’ car and fired at the deputy before their vehicle crashed.

The deputy was not injured.

Online court records don’t show whether Bell or Utley have an attorney.
