DETROIT (AP) - A 46-year-old man has been charged after his DNA was found in previously untested rape kits.
The Wayne County prosecutor’s office says Anthony Thornton of Port Huron was arraigned Tuesday on kidnapping and sexual assault charges.
Evidence was collected in a sexual assault kit in 2010 after a woman was raped in a vacant Detroit house. That kit was not processed until 2015. Another recently processed kit confirmed DNA from a 2011 rape in Detroit.
More than 11,000 kits were found in 2009 in a Detroit police property storage facility. Prosecutor Kym Worthy has pushed efforts to test the kits and prosecute old cases.
Thornton has a Feb. 7 preliminary examination in 36th district court.
The Associated Press left a message Thursday seeking comment from Thornton’s attorney.
