The Federal Trade Commission has filed a lawsuit accusing nationwide discount store Dollar General of overcharging customers.

The FTC claims that over a period of years, Dollar General has mislabeled prices, overcharged customers and not corrected the issue.

“Dollar General has betrayed the trust of millions of American consumers and imposed significant financial harm on communities and consumers who are already struggling to make their paychecks last,” Christopher Mufarrige, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said in a statement.

The FTC complaint says the store took advantage of shoppers, unlawfully earning millions by charging more at the register than the price that was listed on the shelves, in advertisements and on price tags. According to the FTC complaint, Dollar General has received tens of thousands of complaints from consumers across the U.S. At least 20 states are joining the commission’s lawsuit.

Dollar General disputes the FTC’s claims, saying in a statement that “the lawsuit filed today by the Federal Trade Commission and several states suggests that we have abandoned our mission and willfully disregarded the affordability needs of our customers. Nothing could be further from the truth.”
