EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A western Oregon man who sexually abused a girl for about eight years has been sentenced to 25 years in prison with no chance of parole.
Gary Linn Evans, 47, received the sentence Friday in Lane County Circuit Court, The Register-Guard reported (https://bit.ly/2p7s3lr).
He pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree sexual abuse, two counts of first-degree sodomy, and counts of first-degree unlawful sexual penetration and first-degree rape, all felonies.
Evans had no prior criminal record and technically remains an employee of the city of Eugene, where he worked for about five years. He was placed on paid leave from his job as a parking enforcement officer after his arrest in January. Technically, he remains an employee of the city, but a city spokeswoman says he’s now on unpaid leave.
Authorities started investigating after the victim disclosed she was upset after experiencing flashbacks of the abuse. She told authorities the abuse started when she was 8 years old.
Lane County Assistant District Attorney Chris Parosa said sexual abuse robs children of their innocence and can lead to insecurities.
“I was, however, buoyed by the tremendous strength of this particular victim,” Parosa said. “She is smart, talented and courageous. I have no doubt that she will have the kind of success in life that will make everyone in society proud.”
