A teacher at Horizon Elementary School in Loudoun County, Virginia, is facing criminal charges, accused by law enforcement of assaulting a student.

The school resource officer at the Sterling school was notified Thursday of an incident between Valerie Bowen, 49, of Ashburn and a student, prompting an investigation by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, the agency said in a release.

Ms. Bowen has been charged with assault and battery and was issued a summons to appear in court.

The sheriff’s office did not say when Ms. Bowen is due to appear in court and didn’t provide details about the alleged assault.

Loudoun County Public Schools has placed Ms. Bowen on leave, telling the school community in a letter that “the safety and security of our students and staff is our highest priority, and we take any allegation of inappropriate conduct involving a staff member extremely seriously,” according to Washington’s WTTG.

In addition to supporting the investigation by the sheriff’s office, the county school system is conducting its own review of the incident, according to the TV station.
