DENVER (AP) - Denver city officials have announced the sheriff intends to resign following recent controversies.
KUSA-TV reported Wednesday that Sheriff Patrick Firman was appointed in 2015 and is expected to step down Oct. 14. Firman did not immediately comment.
The department faces a lawsuit after a woman who was jailed on suspicion of identity theft gave birth to her son alone in her cell.
It also recently fired a 46-year-old deputy after she was indicted on federal drug charges.
Mayor Michael Hancock says the sheriff has weathered fair and unfair criticism during his tenure, but remained passionate about serving the community. Officials say Firman implemented multiple initiatives including a new use of force policy and a citizen advisory board.
