BELVIDERE, N.J. (AP) - A man who gunned down the mother of his daughter inside her home in 2013 is now headed to state prison.
Warren County prosecutors say Salim Newton received a 24-year sentence on Friday.
The 30-year-old Newton, whose last known address was in Phillipsburg, initially was charged with murder. But he pleaded guilty in May to aggravated manslaughter and a weapons charge.
Prosecutors say Newton shot and killed 22-year-old Melissa Williams in her Phillipsburg home in September 2013. Neighbors reported hearing at least two gunshots and seeing two people running down an alley.
Authorities soon identified Newton as a suspect. He was arrested about a month later in Virginia.
A motive for the shooting has not been disclosed.
