RADFORD, Va. (AP) - A former assistant provost of a Virginia college has pleaded guilty to reckless driving, saying she didn’t realize that she was being chased by police and sheriff’s deputies until she ran over a spike strip.

The Roanoke Times reports 61-year-old Susana Carrillo on Thursday was ordered to pay $216 for the cost of the spike strips that ended the chase. She also was given a suspended 180-day jail sentenced and a $500 fine.

A Montgomery County sheriff’s statement says a deputy spotted Carrillo driving in the middle of two lanes in March. It says the deputy put on his lights and sirens to pull her over, but Carrillo continued driving down U.S. Route 11. It says she was stopped five miles later as she entered Radford.
