BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A Baton Rouge man charged with beating his 5-year-old son to death says the boy died in an accident while they played a game of “helicopter.”
Vernell Day is on trial for second-degree murder in the August 2014 death of his son, Jay’v’une Bergin. The father testified Thursday they were playing “helicopter,” in which Day picked up a chair the boy as sitting in and swung it around. He told jurors the child slipped out of the chair and struck the wall and a door.
The Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/2kxdK7z ) Day’s account of the boy’s death contradicted the earlier testimony of his 10-year-old daughter. She testified Wednesday her father got angry at her brother and swung him by his ankle until the boy’s head banged into the wall and door.
