Analysis thru 4 1/2: Nats losing--and hitless

← return to Chatter

You’d think losing 100 games would be enough indignity for one night. But not for the Nationals. No, they have to cook up something special.

For the fourth time in six games, they went through the first three innings without a hit as Chad Billingsley weaved pitches over, under and around bats. They still don’t have a hit into the fifth, and Billingsley has struck out seven — four of them looking.

Ross Detwiler has been respectable, facing an opponent who’s taking a no-hitter into the middle innings for the second straight game, but he’s struggled with control just enough to give up a couple runs. He walked two and gave up two hits in the third, as the Dodgers scored their second run, and has thrown 41 of his 72 pitches for strikes. Not terrible, but not great — and not good enough when Billingsley is steamrolling the Nationals.
