Gray mum on Thomas, his defense fund

D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray says the decision on whether D.C. Council member Harry Thomas Jr. should resign amid a corruption investigation belongs to Mr. Thomas, not the mayor.

Last week, Mr. Thomas, Ward 5 Democrat, reached a settlement in a civil case filed by the D.C. Attorney General’s Office that requires him to repay $300,000 designated for youth baseball programs.

Mr. Gray on Wednesday also declined to comment on Mr. Thomas’ reported legal defense fund, established to assist him in a federal criminal probe into whether he diverted the funds for his personal use.

The mayor is among city officials who have declined to offer an explicit opinion on whether Mr. Thomas stays, though three council members — David Catania, Mary M. Cheh and Tommy Wells — have called on him to resign.
