Maryland offensive coordinator Gary Crowton will make more than $500,000 in guaranteed compensation according to a copy of an unsigned contract provided by the university on Wednesday.
Crowton’s base salary is $375,000. He will receive an additional $125,000 in guaranteed money for things like TV/radio appearances, fundraising, personal appearances and service and apparel.
Like the rest of Maryland’s staff, Crowton also receives a car allowance of $6,000 annually and a cell phone allowance of $1,440 each year. That makes the total guaranteed amount $507,440 each year.
Crowton also received $37,500 in relocation assistance. He took over at Maryland this year after a stint as Louisiana State’s offensive coordinator.
With Crowton’s financial details revealed, it brings the guaranteed compensation of Maryland’s nine assistant coaches to $2,256,964 in head coach Randy Edsall’s first season. Former coach Ralph Friedgen’s final staff was guaranteed $1,778,356 based on their respective contracts.
That means Maryland spent 26.9 percent more on its assistant coaches this year, though the increase might be slightly lower since former coordinators James Franklin and Don Brown were not in the first year of their respective contracts in 2010 and could have received pay increases not specified in the deals.
