PINEHURST, N.C. – Virginia Tech and Florida State were landslide choices in a preseason media vote to win their respective divisions in the ACC.
Both Maryland (Atlantic) and Virginia (Coastal) were pegged to finish fifth in their divisions.
Florida State was named as the overall favorite on 50 ballots, with Virginia Tech (18), Clemson (2) and Boston College (1) also collecting votes.
Boston College tailback Montel Harris won a plurality of the preseason player of the year voting, appearing on 26 ballots. Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel (14) and Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly (12) also collected more than 10 votes.
Virginia Tech, which won the title last year, collected 66 of the first-place votes in the Coastal Division. Miami, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Virginia and Duke followed.
Florida State led the Atlantic with 65 first-place votes, with Clemson, N.C. State, Boston College, Maryland and Wake Forest following up the Seminoles.
Maryland’s placement was moderately surprising after the Terrapins went 9-4 last season. The Terps changed coaches, but still have much of the talent back from their bounceback team from a year ago.
Terps quarterback Danny O’Brien collected four preseason player of the year votes. Virginia Tech running back David Wilson was fourth in that balloting, collecting eight votes.
