Maryland suspended wide receivers Quintin McCree and Ronnie Tyler indefinitely on Thursday.
The seniors both played extensive roles in the Terrapins’ season-opening defeat of Miami. McCree had seven receptions for 39 yards, while Tyler had six catches for 43 yards and a touchdown.
A state judiciary case search revealed Tyler was charged with second-degree assault Thursday. His trial was set for Nov. 1.
A message left with the public information officer for Maryland’s campus police was not immediately returned Thursday night.
Both McCree and Tyler were academically ineligible for Maryland’s Military Bowl victory over East Carolina last year. McCree said in April that new coach Randy Edsall’s emphasis on academics helped him turn things around in the classroom.
Maryland only used five receivers in the opener, and just two besides McCree and Tyler – juniors Kevin Dorsey and Kerry Boykins – played extensively. Senior Tony Logan, who owns one career reception, also appeared briefly.
