Tailback Brandon Ross will miss Maryland’s opener with a hamstring injury.
Coach Randy Edsall said freshman Albert Reid will start against William & Mary. Justus Pickett and Wes Brown are expected to have reserve roles.
“All three guys are going to play,” Edsall said. “We have roles for the guys. Albert will start, Justus has his role and Wes will be ready to go as well.”
Pickett was the starter entering camp and is the only tailback on the roster with game experience. Ross redshirted last season, while Reid and Brown just arrived in College Park this summer.
Edsall said earlier in the week he anticipated using all four at some point this season, meaning neither Brown or Reid was likely to redshirt even before Ross’ injury.
“I don’t think their running styles are much different,” Edsall said. “They’re both pretty much downhill runners is what they are. I see a little more consistency from Albert throughout the preseason. Then you have those guys who can be more first- and second-down guys. Justus can be third down. Justus can play every down, but as we looked at it through preseason, we felt Albert was the guy who showed the most.”
Edsall also said senior Nick Ferrara will miss the opener with a hip injury. Freshman Brad Craddock will handle the kickoffs and placekicking, while Edsall has yet to decide on Craddock or Nathan Renfro for the punting duties.
Also out is defensive end Keith Bowers, who was declared doubtful earlier in the week.
“He should be ready to go for next week, they tell me,” Edsall said.
Among the others out: G Josh Cary (knee), QB C.J. Brown (knee), CB Isaac Goins (illness), CB A.J. Hendy (ankle) , LB Abner Logan (thigh), DE Andre Monroe (knee), S Matt Robinson (shoulder), DE Isaiah Ross (hamstring) and LB Kenny Tate (knee).
