Maryland defensive end Keith Bowers will miss the rest of spring practice after suffering from heart palpitations before spring break.
“We don’t think there’s going to be any long-term issues there, but now it’s just a matter of him getting some tests done and monitoring if he gets those again,” coach Randy Edsall said after Tuesday’s session, the fourth of 15 for Maryland this spring.
Bowers started 11 games as a true freshman last season, recording 36 tackles, six tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.
Edsall said Bowers did not suffer the heart palpitations during practice.
“That kind of happened during the day that he felt that and went to [athletic trainer] Wes [Robinson] and told him and we had him see the doctor,” Edsall said. “We got some tests done before he left and they wanted to do this procedure before he went home [for spring break] and they went in to try to do this procedure and there was something there so they couldn’t so they decided to put a monitor on him. When he he feels it, he has to hit this button so it can start monitoring his heart so they can find out a little more.”
It was not a one-time deal for Bowers. Edsall said Bowers told him he had experienced it “for a couple weeks.”
“He finally came out and said something and that’s why we try to tell them ‘If you’re hurt or you have a problem, let’s take care of it,’” Edsall said. “Let’s not wait.”
In other injury updates:
* Defensive end Ian Evans pulled his adductor muscle earlier in the month. Edsall said it was a six-week injury that doesn’t require surgery, but it will shelve Evans for the rest of spring ball.
“It’s unfortunate, because he had three pretty good practices when he was out there,” Edsall said. “He got hurt just doing one-on-one pass rush. He came around the corner.”
Evans had seven tackles and a half-sack in four games last year as a redshirt freshman.
* Wide receiver Kevin Dorsey participated in Tuesday’s practice in a limited fashion.
* Edsall said linebacker Marcus Whitfield might have tweaked an ankle Tuesday. Whitfield was switched back to linebacker from defensive end after last season.
