The National Park Service says it will not contest an estimate of the crowd at the National Mall on Inauguration Day to be a record 1.8 million, and says it will use that figure when referring to the inauguration in the future.

“It was an incredible day for the nation, including the men and women of the National Park Service who supported inaugural activities,” said NPS spokesman David Barna.

The previous record for an inauguration was 1.2 million, set in 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in.
