The 112th Congress, which saw record futility, is officially over.

The House officially adjourned at 11:56 a.m. Thursday, with the presiding officer forcefully bringing down the gavel.

Both sessions of the Congress were dominated by fights over taxes and spending, punctuated by the split control of Congress — Republicans used their House majority to push for spending cuts, while Democrats used their Senate majority to slow those changes.
