Schlafly urges GOP to reaffirm support of traditional marriage

A leading supporter of traditional marriage called on the chairman of the Republican National Committee Wednesday to reiterate the party’s opposition to gay marriage.

Phyllis Schlafly, president of the Eagle Forum, urged RNC president Reince Priebus to reinforce the party’s commitment to the 2012 Republican Party Platform, which endorsed traditional marriage.

“We expect all Republican officials to support the platform. The endorsement of same- sex marriage is not acceptable,” Mrs. Schlafly wrote in a letter to Mr. Priebus.

The letter comes after more than 80 high-profile Republicans — most of whom are no longer in office — signed a legal brief in support of the constitutional challenge of California’s Proposition 8 which defines marriage as between a man and a woman.

Proposition 8 banned same-sex marriage in California, and the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the arguments on March 26.

“In view of the pro-gay-marriage brief filed this week by a group of mostly Republican has-beens, we call on the Republican National Committee to consider passing a resolution, at its next meeting, re-affirming its support of the Platform and of the Defense of Marriage Act, which was overwhelmingly passed by Congress,” Mrs. Schlafly wrote. ” I view this as extremely important to the credibility of the Republican Party to the millions of American families who constitute the very base of the party.”
