If you’re the Los Angeles Dodgers, and you are fighting for a division title, when you come to Washington to face the Nationals after losing four straight, you expect to get healthy. They looked pretty sick Tuesday night in a 2-1 loss to the Nationals.
If you are the Dodgers, you can’t lose that game. The Dodgers are a team on the brink of falling apart. They have lost seven of their last eight, falling behind the Diamondbacks in a division race that has been there for the taking. With a clubhouse consisting of the likes of Jeff Kent and Nomar Garciaparra, they are not likely to hold together very well under this collapse. If Joe Torre somehow manages to get this team to the finish line, he should be the NL Manager of the Year. I hope he does, because the postseason would be far more interesting with the Dodgers and Manny Ramirez in it.
Speaking of postseason interest, how many candles do you think are already being lit in the offices of Major League Baseball that somehow we don’t wind up with a World Series of the Arizona Diamondbacks vs. the Tampa Bay Rays?
