Defensive tackle Anthony Montgomery broke a bone in his right hand during today’s intrasquad scrimmage at Redskin Park. Coach Jim Zorn said the team will wait for the swelling to go down and his hand will likely look like a club when he returns. We are expecting an update on when that might be later.
The announced crowd was more than 28,000, breaking the record for training camp attendance set in 2004. We’re not sure if they were counting the thousands of cars that were still stuck on Loundon County Parkway and Waxpool Road at the time of the press release or not.
Some other stuff from the scrimmage:
*WR Anthony Mix, who injured his hamstring yesterday, limped off the field after making a catch early in the scrimmage.
*LB Matt Sinclair, who had four tackles, injured his right shoulder.
*Chris Samuels and Clinton Portis were the starters on offense who did not participate. Ladell Betts was also held out, so Rock Cartwright was the starting running back.
*Eight starters on defense did not play — Montgomery, safety Reed Doughty and linebacker Marcus Washington did take some reps.
*Jason Campbell was 15 of 22 for 122 yards and a touchdown (a 10-yard pass to tight end Todd Yoder during red zone work). He also led the only legit scoring drive and capped it with a 2-yard scamper. Todd Collins was 8-for-13 for 52 yards and threw the only interception (cornerback Cedrick Holt). Colt Brennan was 4-for-7 for 22 yards and Derek Divine was 2 of 6 for 14 yards.
*Antwaan Randle El had four catches for 52 yards, including three on the opening drive. Billy McMullen had the play of the day, a leaping catch between two defenders and subsequent scamper for 43 yards, but it was called back because of an illegal procedure penalty.
*Eric Shelton led all rushers with 15 yards on four carries. The four running backs (Shelton, Cartwright, Marcus Mason and Nehemiah Broughton) combined for only 28 yards on 13 carries. Broughton had three catches, but fumbled one of them away.
*Safety Chris Horton led all tacklers with five.
