Skins sign veteran safety

The Redskins have hit the field for the start of their second set of OTA days. They’ve also signed former Raiders safety Stuart Schweigert and waived linebacker Rian Wallace.

Schweigert, who was cut by Oakland on May 21, started 42 games from 2004-07. He made 315 tackles and intercepted four passes in his 63 games for the Raiders. At Purdue, he broke likely NFL Hall of Famer Rod Woodson’s school record for interceptions.

Schweigert, who turns 27 on June 21, was a free safety for the Raiders, but it’s possible that he’ll push Reed Doughty for the spot formerly occupied by the late Sean Taylor. The only other veteran safeties on the roster are 2007 rookie standout LaRon Landry and special teamer Vernon Fox. Washington also used two second-day draft picks on safeties Kareem Moore and Chris Horton.
