Gray spends day in Memphis

Redskins secondary coach Jerry Gray spent the day not in Ashburn game-planning for the Philadelphia Eagles but in Memphis, Tenn., interviewing for the University of Memphis head coaching position, according to the Commercial-Appeal.

According to the paper’s web site, “Gray traveled to Memphis Monday night had breakfast with FedEx executives today and later interviewed with UofM president Dr. Shirley Raines, athletic director R.C. Johnson and FedEx founder and CEO Fred Smith before flying out this afternoon.”

Gray’s only Memphis connection appears to be Smith, who is close with former Redskins coach Joe Gibbs. Smith’s son, Arthur, was previously a defensive quality coach with the Redskins.

If offered the job and he accepts, Gray would face the decision of leaving the Redskins early so he can recruit and form a coaching staff. That’s a no brainer — he must leave the team so he can put together his new program.

One Memphis insider expects an announcement by Monday or Tuesday of next week.
