In Wednesday’s editions of The Washington Times, your columnist mentioned a pair of programs that let iPhone users — and, presumably, those who use Apple’s soon-to-come iPad — access various print publications. While NewspaperDirect’s PressReader application has brought all of that firm’s titles to the iPhone, I said that Zinio’s platform had “fewer than two dozen” titles available. (At launch, NewspaperDirect claimed to offer “1,400 newspapers and magazines from 90 countries in 42 languages” on the iPhone.)
I got that count from flipping through the magazines on this page at Zinio’s Web site and from my own experience with Zinio’s iPhone application. According to Jeanniey Mullen, an executive vice president and the chief marketing officer for Zinio, I’m wrong: As of Tuesday morning, “we have 74 titles on the iPhone” and not a few dozen.
I stand corrected, to an extent. It’s true that the firm has many more titles available on the iPhone as of Tuesday evening: I fired up the iPhone app and counted 79 titles in all. However, in its news releases, the firm makes this claim: “With over 50,000 digital magazines and books, and e-stores localized in 15 languages, zinio.com is the largest newsstand in the world.”
That would suggest that Zinio’s customers — of which I am also one — will have a lot more to scroll through on our iPhones moving forward.
