Did they wait until Mitt Romney had fallen off the public radar? Maybe. All Enlist, a new breed of Mormon feminists seeking gender equality, have emerged as the holiday season nears its peak, declaring Sunday to be worldwide “Wear Pants to Church Day.”
Though trousers are not part of the traditional church-going wardrobe for most Mormon women, 1,000 have already signed on express their “Pantsimony” by donning their rebellious wardrobe this weekend.
“We do not seek to eradicate the differences between women and men, but we do want the LDS Church to acknowledge the similarities,” the group says, faulting the church’s “reliance on — and enforcement of — rigid gender roles that bear no relationship to reality.”
The ladies are encouraging their menfolk to show support by wearing a purple tie. Or maybe some purple socks. Purple, they say, is historically associated with the women’s suffrage movement.
“Attending church is about worship and learning to be followers of Jesus Christ,. Generally church members are encouraged to wear their best clothing as a sign of respect for the Savior, but we don’t counsel people beyond that.” counters Church of the Latter Day spokesman Scott Trotter
