Status of Capitals’ Mike Green still unclear

McPhee says defenseman didn’t necessarily see groin specialist

Washington Capitals General Manager George McPhee didn’t reveal a lot about Mike Green’s whereabouts. He did make reference to Matt Lauer and the old “Today” show segment “Where in the World Is Matt Lauer?” Where in the world is Green?

McPhee said the All-Star defenseman will join the Caps in Denver and skate with the team, but Green’s exact status with what has been considered a groin injury is unclear.

“It’s not worse than we already knew, and he has been making progress. We’re just trying to expedite things,” McPhee said in a brief meeting with beat reporters. “We’ll know more based on the treatments he’s getting.”

The Caps confirmed earlier this week that Green saw a “specialist.” Asked if Green saw a groin specialist, McPhee said, “Not necessarily.” The defenseman in the past year-plus has had the following injuries: shoulder, ankle, groin and concussion.

Green has missed 15 straight games and 21 of the past 22. The groin problem happened in a collision with the Devils’ Ryan Carter in Newark, N.J., on Nov. 11.

McPhee said surgery has been ruled out.

“I don’t know a lot right now,” McPhee said. “We’ll know more in a couple days when he joins the team.”
