McCoy’s value as a teacher is not limited to quarterbacks, however. After running his sprints Friday morning, he walked to the 20-yard-line with tight end Matt Veldman, who was signed Thursday. Veldman lined up and ran a series of out routes toward the near sideline, with McCoy supplying the passes.

“You caught that at 16 [yards],” McCoy told his new target. “I want you to catch that at 14.”

The repeated the drill for about 10 minutes, until McCoy was satisfied. Then the third-string quarterback picked up his pads and walked off the field. He had two more days of practice before facing Cleveland, and two more preseason games before facing the uncertainty of cut-down day.

“I’m playing well and just want to go out there and compete, do my best with the reps that I get and help the guys around me play their best,” McCoy said. “You never know what will happen.”
