A quick medical update before I get hacking on everything that will appear in tomorrow’s paper…

Roger Bernadina fractured his right ankle on that great catch in the eighth inning. He landed awakwardly and did the damage right there. He was taken to a local hospital to get some further tests, and the Nats won’t know for sure how long he’ll be out until tomorrow. But it’s going to be a while, at least two months, maybe longer.

So Bernadina has been placed on the 15-day DL, and the Nats will recall outfielder Justin Maxwell from Class AAA Syracuse in time for tomorrow’s game against the Marlins. Why not Lastings Milledge? Because, as acting GM Mike Rizzo said: “I didn’t want Milledge to be a backup.” Obviously, Elijah Dukes will remain as the starting center fielder.

That’ll do it for now. I’ll leave you with the most-popular word from the Nats clubhouse after this one. It was used twice by Manny Acta, and a couple more times by players: “Deflating.” That’s probably the best way to describe the overall feeling at the end of this day.
