Who’s the one guy in the Nats’ bullpen who has consistently gotten the job done so far this season? The one guy who Manny Acta has been able to rely on late in ballgames?
Joe Beimel, right?
That would be the same Joe Beimel who was just placed on the 15-day DL with a left hip flexor strain and replaced by none other than Saul Rivera.
Just when you think things can’t get any worse…
Beimel, who had a 1.23 ERA and four holds in eight relief appearances so far, apparently hurt himself making a tumbling catch of Kelly Johnson’s drag bunt in the eighth inning last night. It was a nice play and earned a nice round of applause from the … oh, 100 or so people who were still in the ballpark.
The night’s second rain delay came right after that play, and when the game resumed 33 minutes later, Garrett Mock was on the mound for the Nats. Everyone just figured they weren’t going to bring back Beimel after the delay. Turns out he was hurt and couldn’t come back.
So yes, the Nats have recalled Rivera from Class AAA Syracuse, less than 48 hours after demoting him following a wretched ninth-inning meltdown against the Marlins. Both Acta and Mike Rizzo were pretty harsh when talking about the right-hander, so you’ve got to wonder what kind of state of mind he’ll be in now that he’s back so soon.
Obviously, more to come…
