The Washington Times - March 10, 2009, 10:16AM

The big news of the morning is the Nationals’ first round of spring cuts. So far, 10 players are gone,  Ross Detwiler, Chris Marrero and Mike O’Connor being the most prominent names. The Nationals also sent pitchers Bobby Brownlie, Justin Jones Preston Larrison and J.D. Martin to their minor-league camp, as well as infielder Matt Whitney, catcher Javier Herrera and outfielder Destin Hood.

“The two toughest are done,” Acta said. “The two guys on the 40-man roster (Detwiler and O’Connor).”

Detwiler was optioned to Class AA Harrisburg, while O’Connor was optioned to Class AAA Syracuse.

In other news:

—Shawn Hill appears to have emerged from his first test — a simple game of catch — without any more elbow problems, and will take the next steps later in the week. He’ll throw a flat-ground session on Wednesday, followed by a bullpen session on Friday.

—Pete Orr should be returning tomorrow from the World Baseball Classic after Canada lost 6-2 to Italy last night, a defeat that certainly disappointed Shawn Hill.
