The Nationals plan to purchase the contract of reliever Mike MacDougal for this weekend’s series against the Philadelphia Phillies, according to a club source.

MacDougal, who signed a minor-league deal with Washington on May 3, exercised an “out” clause in his contract on Tuesday, but the club had 48 hours to decide to promote him to the majors and keep his services.

The right-hander had a 1.23 ERA and two saves in seven appearances with Syracuse, and reports were that his fastball was regularly in the 94-95 mph range.

A former All-Star closer with the Kansas City Royals, MacDougal was released by the Chicago White Sox last month after posting a 12.46 ERA in five games.
