Ross Detwiler made it through his first two career starts with relative ease. Tonight, he found out the hard way that life in the big leagues is anything but easy.

The Phillies absolutely rocked Detwiler over four innings. The final totals show five runs and 10 hits, but that doesn’t even show how hard they were hitting the ball. Even the outs were rockets.

All three outfielders slammed into the fence trying in vain to catch deep drives. Josh Willingham made a diving catch of another line drive. Nick Johnson snagged another rocket off the bat of Raul Ibanez to save extra bases.

So Detwiler is out, replaced by Jason Bergmann, who will try to stop the bleeding and give the Nats, who have had very little success so far against Phillies left-hander (and fellow Northwestern Wildcat) J.A. Happ.

It’s 5-1 Phillies in the fifth.
