On Sunday, I wondered how much of a disaster it could be if Boise State, Ball State and Utah all finished in the top 12 of the BCS standings and locked up spots in the top five bowl games.

Well, that almost certainly won’t happen, since the BCS —- as one reader pointed out to me —- is only obligated to take the highest-ranked team from outside a power conference.

So that means Utah or Boise State will likely be in one of those games, but not both.

On the bright side, that means an extra spot from the bowl lineups of the Big Ten (Ohio State) or the Pac-10 (Southern Cal) could be pried loose.

Still, that’s not nearly as much fun as the other scenario. Which is a shame, but not really all that surprising.
